Trio for Horn, Violin, and Piano
This music was commissioned by and dedicated to Chamberosity, the ensemble created by my dear friends Jeff Forden, Linda Sinanian, and Christine Doré. I am deeply grateful for their suggestions and feedback, which have led to significant improvements in the piece.
The trio is a series of character pieces. The image of the first movement was suggested by a story Jeff and Linda tell of a party in Long Island where Jeff serenaded guests with horn calls as they were ferried to an island across a foggy lake. The second movement, a romantic waltz, leads without pause to the final movement, which begins with a mournful elegy and moves to a nostalgic conclusion over a gentle Latin rhythm. The rich harmonies in this movement were inspired by the music of Gil Evans.
